ChatGPT memory vs. chat history

Chat history contains previous conversations. Memory is information used to personalize future responses, and can draw on chats and other sources when enabled.

Review Settings → Personalization → Memory. Settings and names may vary as updates roll out. Turning memory off does not delete your existing chats.

Removing information completely may require reviewing every source where it appears, including chats, files, memories, and connected apps. Start with the official memory guide.
